It’s the most exciting/frustrating time of year again with the transfer season well underway, football fans are already glued to Twitter and Sky Sports waiting to see what’s going to happen to some of the world’s biggest names in football. Players like Wayne Rooney and David Villa continue to create speculation regarding their futures, but the five players below represent, for me, the biggest ongoing transfer rumors that we’re all watching:
Thiago Alcantara – If you believed newspaper reports a week ago, Thiago Alcantara has agreed terms with Manchester United. However, we’re all still waiting on a deal. This one is driving me crazy! It’s quite interesting that Sky Sports are barely covering it, which implies that maybe there’s not as much truth behind the move as the papers would have us believe. While Xavi and Iniesa are still on the scene at Barcelona, Thiago is always going to struggle to be a first team regular. If reports are true, the main driving force behind him making a possible exit from Barca, is to ensure his inclusion in Spain’s World Cup Squad next year, and a guaranteed starting role with the Premier League champions could be just what the doctor ordered.
Thiago is yet to make a move despite his very public exit fee, so us Manchester United fans are forced to wait a while longer. United like to tie up their business early, so if a deal isn’t done by the end of next week, I’d consider this deal dead.
Gareth Bale – A man who just had the season of his life, picking up the Premier League Player of the Year award as well as the Young Player of the Year Award, a feat last accomplished by the one and only CR7. Bale openly idolizes the former Ronaldo, and if reports are true and Zinedine Zidane, long time admirer of Bale gets his way, he could be following in his footsteps as Real Madrid are in hot pursuit.
Bale has also been linked with United but Spurs have stated that he’s not for sale at any price. Everyone has a price though, don’t they?
Robert Lewandowski – Speaking of Real Madrid, remember who put four goals past them in the Champions League? Lewandowski looked certain to be heading to Bayern this summer but it’s clear that Dortmund won’t let their most prized asset leave to one of their domestic rivals, so if Lewandowski is going anywhere it’ll have to be either England, Spain, or Italy.
So where’s he off to if he no longer wants to play his football in the yellow and black of Dortmund? United, Chelsea?
Gonzalo Higuain – For most of the summer so far it’s looked like the Argentine hit-man would be heading to Arsenal or Juventus, but with Juventus recently acquiring Tevez, it looks as though the path is clear for Wenger to get his man. Higuain isn’t always guaranteed first team football at Madrid as there is some stiff competition in the form of Ronaldo and Benzema. However, there’s no denying his quality.
This one looks close.
Cristiano Ronaldo – Can it be that Cristiano Ronaldo could be heading back to Old Trafford? The Portuguese attacker hasn’t made his unhappiness a secret during the past season, causing various media outlets to link him with a sensational return to the reds. As a United fan myself, I think I would cry with pure glee if the big man did return home, but I can’t see it quite honestly.
Most clubs reconvene next week, so hopefully we’ll begin to get some answers. So love it or hate it, the transfer speculation is going to kick in to 5th gear next week.
Who should your club be looking at?
